From prototype storage to blueprint: KB.energy markets KB.eSAVE with suena energy

Battery storage systems are an important component of the energy transition: they provide flexibility and help to better integrate renewable energies into the system. However, in order for storage systems to be implemented on a larger scale rather than just in isolated cases, reliable operating concepts that are economical and dependable are needed in addition to the technology.

KB.energy has developed a battery storage system that is designed precisely for this purpose: KB.eSAVE. A model storage facility in Sulingen demonstrates its structure and operation in real time. suena energy is responsible for the optimization of this innovative project.

Project overview: KB.eSAVE in Sulingen

The KB.energy prototype storage system is a stand-alone high-performance storage system with a capacity of 0.8 MW / 1.3 MWh. The KB.eSAVE has been specially designed for trading on the electricity market.

Technical design: deliberately industrial, easy to maintain and flexible in use

The KB.eSAVE has a number of special technical features:

  • Components from Germany: All components – with the exception of the battery cell – come from Germany and are essentially standard industrial components.

  • Lithium iron phosphate battery cells for safety and operation: Around 1,600 lithium iron phosphate cells (LFPLiFePO4) are used. These are particularly safe as they cannot overheat. In addition, the cells can be monitored and replaced individually, which makes maintenance easier

  • Flexible concept: The KB.eSAVE is designed so that it can be used in different configurations – stand-alone, co-location, and indoors and outdoors.

  • Availability: With virtually no calibration or downtime, the KB.eSAVE is available for dynamic trading on the electricity exchange.

  • Durability: The KB.eSAVE comes with a manufacturer's warranty for a residual capacity of more than 80 per cent after 20 years or 10,000 full charge cycles.

Vermarktung mit dem suena Energy Trading Autopilot

suena energy uses the suena Energy Trading Autopilot for marketing. Based on forecasts, real-time data and market information, the system makes fully automated decisions on how best to use the storage facility in electricity trading. It reacts dynamically to changing market conditions and places energy where it achieves the greatest economic effect.

A key component of this is the intelligent linking of different trading periods and mechanisms: instead of optimising in isolation, the Autopilot flexibly makes use of opportunities across multiple electricity markets toincrease returns sustainably and make marketing stable and scalable.

At the same time, the suena Energy Trading Autopilot takes into account degradation and efficiency losses in battery systems. This means that the use of the storage facility is not only optimised economically in theshort term, but also with regard to the technical substance of the asset. This can extend its service life by up to three years.

Collaboration on the model project

KB.eSAVE in Sulingen is more than just a storage project: it is a model project in which technical development and cooperation between all parties involved were central.

KB.energy and suena energy worked closely together as marketers to design the storage facility in the best possible way for electricity trading. The focus was on clear coordination, transparency and the common goalof creating a setup that would prove itself in real-world operation and at the same time serve as a reference for further projects

"In suena energy, we found a partner who shares our commitment to innovation. The collaboration was characterised by open exchange and transparency. And by the fact that we were able to advance issues quickly, thoroughly and in a solution-oriented manner. This enabled us to achieve the best possible result together."   — Dirk Labudda, KB.energy

Outlook: scaling up based on the Sulingen model

This makes the model storage facility a blueprint: a practical reference project that shows how technological and economic requirements can be combined. The test in Sulingen demonstrated how stable and economical the system is in everyday use. This lays a solid foundation on which further projects can be built in the future.
